Report and photography by Wayne Bennett
Following the disappointing loss of the extremely popular Waddington Airshow from the calendar, after the 2014 event, there has been a very large hole in the Northern show scene. It was therefore most welcome when the announcement came that a new show was to be established at Scampton, the famous home of the Red Arrows, last year. The subsequent two day event was declared to be a success and attracted 50,000 visitors to the debut weekend.
Unfortunately the costs and sheer logistics of staging an airshow have proven too onerous and have prevented a follow up show from being arranged for 2018. The organisers tell us that they are learning the lessons of the 2017 show and making plans to bring the show back as an annual event leaner and fitter than before. It remains to be seen whether this laudable aim can be achieved, but i have everything crossed in hope.
Prior to the 2017 show I managed to get across to Scampton on the preceding Thursday and Friday for the arrivals of all the display aircraft. The cost was a very reasonable £5 and refreshments were also available as the base staff looked after us very well. We were even treated to full displays from the L’Armee De l’Air Alpha Jet, Belgian F-16 and privately owned OV-10 Bronco.
Here is an extended gallery of images from those two days.
